FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my candle burn?

Coconut wax is a very slow, clean burning wax. Burn rates are approximate, but consistent if burned properly. All of our candles have been tested thoroughly to ensure proper burn and wax melt. On average our wooden wick candles burn at the rate of 1 ounce every 7 hours. So a 4 oz candle will burn up to 28 hours while our 10 ounce candle will burn up to 70 hours. These burn rates are approximate as there are variables that can increase your candles burn rate, such as air flow, drafts, and proper wick trimming. See our FAQ on Care & Safety to ensure you get the most burn time out of your candle.

How do I care for my wooden wick candle?

The first time your Willowood candle is lit always allow a pool of warm wax to form across the surface of the candle; this might take between 30 minutes to a couple of hours depending on the size of your Willowood Candle, but it helps to create an even burn, promotes longevity and maximizes fragrance performance. Here are our tips or optimal burning: • Never leave candle unattended. • Burn away from children, pets and flammable objects. • Place candle on a stable, heat resistant surface. • Burn candles away from heating and cooling vents, and keep away from drafts. • Burn candle for no more than 4 hours at a time. • Ensure wick is trimmed to 1/8" - 3/16" before lighting and again after each burn. • Ensure flame is extinguished before placing plastic cover on top. • Wooden wicks do need a little attention and tending to before each burn, similar to cotton wicks. Be sure to gently snap off the ash or burnt wood along the top edge of the wick and then light as usual. • If after burning the candle for a long period of time you notice the flame height getting too low, it may be necessary to tap off any excess ash or burnt wood along the top of the wick. The flame will then return to its proper optimal height.
• Be very careful not to let any debris from the wick (or anything else) fall into the candle. • Extinquish candle when 1/2" of wax is remaining. • Follow all candle safety guidelines.

Are your candles all natural?

While we make every effort to ensure a safe and toxic free product, we do not promote our products as "all natural". We do however offer an extremely clean burning product, free of toxic additives, is eco-logically sound, environmentally friendly, paraffin free, paraben and sulfate free and made using sustainable resources. Consumers should be aware of any candle labeled"all natural", or "organic". Do your research and be informed of what you are burning in your home.

What is coconut wax? How is it different from soy?

We source a premium blend of all natural coconut wax to create our lush and elegantly silky candles. What makes this blend unique is that it is specially formulated for container candles to create a luxurious creamy white candle with optimal fragrance performance. Due to its superior quality and performace, coconut wax is quickly becoming the top choice of luxury candle designers. The features of our blend are : 1) Extremely clean burning - the waxes used are all natural with no chemical additives 2) Exquisite ivory cream look and feel 3) Because the wax we source is predominately coconut (palm wax is blended for hardening since coconut is a very soft wax), our candles can hold double the fragrance load per pound of wax than is tolerated by pure soy! 4) Our blend works well with oil fragrances, and doesn't interfere with the characteristics of the fragrance like pure soy can. There are some ethical and environmental concerns being raised regarding the deforestation of lands to increase soy production for a growing soy industry. In light of these growing concerns, we have opted to develop our product using sustainable, environmentally friendly ingredients.

Do you ship during the summer months?

During the heat of the summer we will ship on Monday & Tuesdays only. This is to prevent your candle orders from sitting in hot warehouses over weekends. We resume normal shipping schedules in October. Shipping in hot weather may affect the integrity of your candle. Coconut wax is a very soft wax and if kept in hot weather for long periods of time, will get soft and sticky. If you order your candles during very hot weather, chances are your candles will get soft in shipment. Please be aware your candles can be affected by severe exposure to hot temperatures of 90 degrees or higher for long periods of time. Mail trucks are not air conditioned. Please keep this in mind when purchasing candles in the summer months. Willowood Candle Co. can not be held liable for melted candles. PLEASE ORDER AT YOUR OWN RISK. We do advise that if you order candles during the heat of the summer, please make arrangements with your carrier to not leave your package in a hot mailbox, or out in the sun for long periods of time.

What kind of fragrance oils do you use?

We source premium quality fine fragrance oils from the top suppliers in the industry. Our fragrance oils include botanical oils, essential oils, and perfume oils, and are paraben and sulfate free. Our standards of quality ensure we verify with each supplier that they certify the oils we source are in compliance with the standards of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA). The IFRA Standards regarding use restrictions are based on safety assessments by the Panel of Experts of the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) based on the 44th Amendment to the IFRA Code of Practice and are enforced by the IFRA Scientific Committee. We ensure the oils used are utilized in compliance with industry standards and are safe for burning in the home.

Are wooden wicks better than cotton wicks?

YES! Aside from the added value of creating a unique ambiance, our wooden wicks are 100% natural and are not processed in any way. Unlike cotton wicks, wooden wicks do not mushroom and have little carbon buildup, debris, or sooting. They are non-toxic and clean burning. We source our wooden wicks from Lumetique(tm), makers of the Original Wooden Wick. Their exclusively patented wicks are sourced and manufactured in the USA from FSC-Certified mills. What does this mean? FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council and they are an independent, non-profit organization that protects forests for future generations. Because FSC is the gold standard in forest certification, it is the only system supported by groups such as WWF, Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Natural Resources Defense Council and National Wildlife Federation.

Are all your candles phthalate free?

No. While the majority of our stock are phthalate free, we do still stock some fragrances by request that we have not been able to obtain phthalate free. Our suppliers are working on changing their formulations to remove pthalates and we are anxiously awaiting the new releases. In the meantime, we do disclose in the product descriptions which candles are phthalate free and which are not. Read the product discriptions carefully and contact us directly with any questions or concerns.

What is meant by "clean burning" candle?

Natural wax candles are marketed as "clean burning" because they burn without emitting the toxins attributed with burning paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is a white or colourless soft solid, derived from petroleum, coal or oil shale. Essentially, paraffin is a by product of petroleum and when burned will emit those same toxins into your home that accompany the burning of fossil fuels. Many people who can not tolerate paraffin based candles, find they enjoy natural wax candles without suffering familar ailments like nausea, headache, irritated eyes, nose, throat or aggravation of allergies. To be clear, there is always a risk associated with burning any product indoors, but science has proven that burning paraffin based products indoors is associated with an increased risk of certain cancers and cause damage to interior ventilation systems. By contrast, clean burning, natural wax candles offer a safer, non-toxic alternative to traditional paraffin based products. Consumers should be aware of products labeled soy blend or para-soy as these products contain paraffin wax in addition to soy. Many candle makers include "additives" into their products. These additives vary, but can include toxic componants, or even paraffin ingredients. Also color dyes may include additives that can contain toxins as well. Willowood candles contains an all natural coconut wax blended with palm wax and contain no paraffin, paraben, or toxic additives. We use no dyes or stabilizers and the result is an extremely clean buring, clean-smelling candle.
